Thursday Lunchtime Environmental Talks

We had a nice showing of people, about 25-27, last Thursday for Caroline Ask's presentation on College Station Recycling. About half of the participants were not regular members (or closet UUs) of the Brazos UU.

From this talk, many of us found that we are not recycling correctly and that more community education on the correct way to recycle is needed to improve the efficiency and productivity of the CS recycling program. The idea that we might get a group of volunteers together to develop a flier that gives better instructions than the one the City of CS gives out came up. I have already corrected how I recycle after Caroline's talk.

  • No more pizza boxes even if they only have a little oil on them.

  • I was recycling all plastics that did not have a triangle on their bottoms but now only the ones with 1 & 2 triangles.

  • No more paper towels or napkins.

If we came up with a better instructions for recycling with more detailed explainations, we could circulate this information to churches, social groups, college students, etc. in the area. This should increase compliance and improve the efficiency of recycling in BC/S. We could add other recycling/reusing information such as taking old hangers for reuse by dry cleaners, taking plastic film like plastic bags, cellophane wrap to grocery stores for recycling, etc. Any Volunteers?
