Ministry for Social Justice and the Earth

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Last month, the Touchstones topic for the month was “Grace.” Among the daily meditations was a quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart

full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

I must admit, like many UU’s of a more humanist bent, I have trouble with the concept of grace, but this quotation cut through the fog for me.

There are many ways you can serve others in the Bryan/College Station community. An important role of the UUCBV Ministry for Social Justice and the Earth is to point out ways that we, by pooling our individual actions, can live up to our UU Principles.

Pam Johnson acts as our coordinator for Family Promise, a home for families that find themselves without one. Joyce Langenegger acts as our representative to Brazos Interfaith Immigration Network at a time that all immigrants seem to be under constant attack in our country. Zoe Dobbs serves as one of our two representatives to Texas UU Justice Ministries as TxUUJM gears up for the 2019 session of the Texas legislature. Their work makes the job of MSJE Chair much easier. In my case, with a work schedule and personal business schedule to balance with other church commitments, they have made the job doable.

As I transition out of my role as chair of the MSJE, I plan to continue to serve by acting as the treasurer for the committee. Is there a role that you can step up to serve?

TEXAS UU JUSTICE MINISTRY 2019 LEGISLATIVE RALLY DAY

We will be traveling on Wednesday, March 20th, to the Capitol in Austin where we will join with hundreds of other UU’s from around the state to visit with our Texas Representatives and Senators. Specifically, we will meet with our legislators from the Brazos Valley to share our views on pending legislation of special concern to UU’s. The day in Austin starts at 8:30 AM, but there will likely be Austin area UU’s willing to provide overnight stays. To register, visit the TxUUJM website https://www.eventbrite.com/e/texas-unitarian-universalist-justice-ministry-legislative-action-day-registration-53575694344.
